At MacDowell, Andrew Zimmermann worked on "Every Church in Nebraska City," a series of photographs documenting the religious architecture of a midwestern town. He is the recipient of a 2012 fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The Graphics Studio (as it was originally named) was converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, and originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
