At MacDowell, Anzhelina Polonskaya worked on her poetry book Paul Klee’s Boat, which was published by Zephyr's Press in 2013. Her book A Voice, selected poems (Northwestern University Press, 2004) was a finalist for the Corneliu Popescu Prize for European Poetry in Translation and for the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages prize for literature in translation.

Anzhelina Polonskaya became a recognised writer and poet during the turbulent post-Soviet Union era. Inspired by the works of famous Russian writers, she became a self-taught poet and began writing seriously at the age of eighteen. A talented figure skater, Polonskaya decided to focus on developing her writing skills and poetic voice.

Marian MacDowell and friends originally named this studio in memory of Anna Baetz, the nurse who helped care for Edward MacDowell in the waning years of his life.
