Aspasia Voulis (1926-2001) studied at Art Institute of Chicago, University of Chicago, and the Institue of Design, Chicago. She was a fellow at MacDowell, Yaddo, The Ossabaw Island Project, and The Hambidge Foundation.
In 1943, while studying both painting and music at Interlocken, Michigan, Voulis had begun diverse experiments toward creating "visual music" in painting and had developed interests in architecture, stage design, light, and optics. She was one of the first artists to follow the tenets of the "New Art," inspired by her interest in and meeting with Charles Biederman in 1949.
