Bei Ling is a poet and journal editor from Beijing, China. In 1993 Ling launched the literary magazine Tendency as a platform for young writers, but was arrested for illegal publication. This led to international protests, where he was then released, fined, and deported. Ling then became a fellow at Brown University. Since his time at Brown, Ling has lived in Boston and New York, and works as the Executive Director of the Independent Chinese PEN Center. His works have been featured in several publications such as The Wall Street Journal, and he continues his activist work speaking out against Chinese officials and supporting activist artist Ai Weiwei. His work has been published in China and the U.S.
