C.A. Johnson is a Brooklyn-based playwright originally from Metairie, LA. Her plays include All The Natalie Portmans (MCC Theater), Thirst (2017 Kilroys List, CATF), The Climb (Cherry Lane Mentor Project), An American Feast (NYU Playwrights Horizons Theater School), I Know I Know I Know (featuring original songs by Grammy winner Kathryn Gallagher), and Somebody’s Body.
Johnson was awarded a Helen Merrill Award for Playwriting in 2022 and is a current member playwright at New Dramatists. She was previously a Tow Playwright in Residence at MCC Theater, a 2018 P73 Playwriting Fellow, The Lark's 2016-17 Van Lier Fellow, a Dramatists Guild Fellow, a member of The Working Farm at SPACE on Ryder Farm, a Core Writer at The Playwrights Center, a member of The Civilians R&D Group, a Sundance/Ucross Fellow and a 2018 Sundance Theatre Lab Fellow. Her work has been commissioned by Manhattan Theatre Club, Seattle Rep, Page 73, and Chautauqua Theater Company.
While taking part in the first iteration of Virtual MacDowell, Johnson worked on the second draft of a new play. While at MacDowell in 2024, she worked on her play The Trial of Millicent Ohakwu, a commission for the Chautauqua Theatre Company to be workshopped in summer 2024. She also began writing an original screenplay titled Boy in Repose, a meditation on art, desire, and queerness set at a New England women's college.
