Calley N. Anderson is a Brooklyn-based playwright from Memphis, TN. She was recently awarded the I AM SOUL Playwright Residency with Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre and will be working on several plays over the course of the 18-month residency.

Past and current affiliations include American Theatre Group PlayLab, Clubbed Thumb Early Career Writers Group, The Civilians R&D Group, Liberation Theatre Company Writing Residency Program, and Dramatists Guild Foundation Fellows. Beyond playwriting, she is also program manager at NY Writers Coalition.

While at MacDowell in 2022, she worked on the second play in a trilogy. Each of these plays is set in a different decade during the 1800s in the American South and focuses on what it took for Black folks to make choices, create a self, create agency, and navigate within a nation going through various moments of transition and upheaval. Anderson will continue working on this play as part of her residency with Liberation Theatre Company through early 2023.

The yellow clapboard New Jersey Studio, located on a grassy, sloping site, was funded by the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs and built as an exact replica of Monday Music Studio (1913).
