Carey Baraka is a writer from Kisumu, Kenya. His writing has been published in Guardian Longreads, The Atlantic, Slice Magazine, The Drift, Literary Hub, Guernica, and Vogue Business, among other places. He is the recipient of fellowships and grants from the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, the Silvers Foundation, and the Pulitzer Center.

While at MacDowell, Carey worked on a first draft of a novel, How A Person Is, a book that veers around grief, loss, and literary history in post-independence East Africa.

Carey Baraka worked in the Sorosis studio.

Sorosis Studio was funded by the New York Carol Club of Sorosis. The small, masonry studio was designed by F. Winsor, Jr., the architect who also designed Savidge Library (1926) and Mixter Studio (1927).
