Catherine Barjansky (1890-1965) was a sculptor, writer, visual artist, and educator born in Odessa, Ukraine. Barjansky is most widely known for her sculptures depicting prominent personalities in her environment. Barjansky began her study of sculpture in Monaco, and went on to open a school in Rome where she remained until she moved to New York in 1939. Before she moved to America, she traveled and collaborated with artist across Europe, such as Charles Catteau. Barjansky’s work is exhibited in variety of venues in Europe and the U.S. Barjansky also wrote a series of books, including Portraits with Backgrounds, Catherine Barjansky: Miniature Sculpture in Wax, Portraits en figures en cire de Catherine Barjansky, and Sculpting made easy; the Barjansky method of figure and portrait sculpture by outline.

Mixter

Catharine Barjansky worked in the Mixter studio.

Built in 1927–1930, the Florence Kilpatrick Mixter Studio was funded by its namesake and designed by the architect F. Winsor, Jr., who also designed MacDowell's original Savidge Library in 1925. Mixter Studio, solidly built of yellow and grey-hued granite, once had sweeping views of Pack Monadnock to the east. The lush forest has now grown…
