Charles Gute received his B.F.A. from the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1984 and his M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco in 1987. Gute has participated in numerous group shows at venues including Catharine Clark Gallery, New Langton Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Christopher Grimes Gallery, Santa Monica; and the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Gute’s work has been written about in Frieze, ARTnews, Flash Art, Art+Auction, Artforum, NY Arts and The Art Newspaper. He has also created original artist’s projects for a number of publications including Fillip Review, Art Lies, stretcher.org, Useless and Private Circulation. In the summer of 2009, he presented a new large-scale outdoor work at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York. Gute currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow.
