Charles Halka wrote a song cycle for voice and piano using as text the letters his grandfather wrote to his grandmother while stationed in Italy during World War II. His work is performed internationally and has included collaborative projects such as operas and music for dance.

Charles Halka worked in the Chapman studio.
Chapman Studio was funded by Mrs. Alice Woodrough Chapman in memory of her husband, composer George Alexander Chapman. Symmetrically massed, the building is stuccoed on the exterior with a natural, unpainted cement.
