While at MacDowell Courtney Sender worked on her debut novel, about three characters from each of the Abrahamic religions. She was born in northern New Jersey and is based in Baltimore. She holds an M.F.A. in fiction from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars, where she currently teaches, and a B.A. in English from Yale.

Courtney Sender worked in the Sprague-Smith studio.
In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
