Born in New York City, Cressandra Thibodeaux moved to Houston in 1981 and attended the High School for Performing and Visual Arts, majoring in dance. She also studied at San Francisco Ballet School and toured with Texas Ballet. She received a B.F.A. in English and a minor in dance at University of Texas, in Austin. In 1997, Thibodeaux received her M.F.A. from Columbia University’s film program. She’s an award-winning filmmaker and founder of 14 Pews and Bechdel Films, a female production company. In 2010, her LGBTQ film festival “It Gets Better Festival” was written-up in both The New York Times and Texas Monthly as “the place to be if you were in Houston over Thanksgiving.” Furthermore, 14 Pews’ “Theremin Festival,” which Thibodeaux produced and curated was written-up in The New York Times, Texas Monthly, and Houston Chronicle. In 2013, she created the 14 Pews Film Academy, where she teaches filmmaking to at-risk-teens while making films on Houston artists. Her mixed-media series "Oil on Water" was exhibited at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. Thibodeaux’s exhibition, "My Box Series" on reproductive rights, opened August 4, 2018 at G-Spot Contemporary Art Gallery in Houston, Texas.
