When he arrived at MacDowell, author Dave Madden was at work on a novel and a book of essays about standup comedy and constructing the self. His first nonfiction book was about taxidermy. During his residency, Madden finished an essay and began a new nonfiction book project.

Youngstown Studio was given to MacDowell by friends of Miss Myra McKeown in Youngstown, OH, where she promoted both art and music.
