Discipline: Visual Art – mixed media
Region: Roxbury, CT
MacDowell Fellowships: 2023

David Anthone is an interdisciplinary artist working alongside his husband, Ron Norsworthy, as DARNstudio, located in Roxbury, CT. DARN investigates the built, designed, or otherwise manifested world we live in, breaking down its components and uncoupling them from implicit and inherited meaning(s). They re-assemble things in a way that disrupts the original function and encourages alternative ways of understanding objects, ideas, and structures through a process they call “re:meaning.”

During his 2023 MacDowell Fellowship, David, with Ron, worked on the ongoing series, “Another Country: A Quilt Cycle.” Work from this series is included in the permanent collection of the International Quilt Museum, the NY Historical Society as well as private collections. They also created a video presentation for a symbol quilt workshop for 400 sixth graders that they'll be leading. Additionally, they refined their final round submission for the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers for Roanoke College in Roanoke, VA. Finally, they spoke about their new social sculpture, GOAT: THE ART GAME with a small group of other Fellows and workshopped the project with a lively evening of gameplay in MacDowell’s Main Hall. GOAT will be acquired by the Newark Museum of Art in the Spring/Summer of 2023.
