David Birkin is British-born artist making work around civil liberties issues such as surveillance, censorship, and the legal frameworks underpinning contemporary warfare. He was a studio fellow on the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Programin 2014 and previously completed a skywriting project with the ACLU and a collaborative set of drawings with the military-appointed courtroom sketch artist at the Guantanamo Tribunals. He worked on a short film about a drone pilot.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
