David Cote is a playwright, librettist, and arts journalist based in New York City. Plays include Saint Joe, Fear of Art, and Otherland (O’Neill National Playwrights Conference Finalist). Operas include Blind Injustice (Cincinnati Opera); Three Way (Brooklyn Academy of Music and Nashville Opera); The Scarlet Ibis (Prototype, NYC); and Fade (Second Movement, London). The Scarlet Ibis had second productions by Chicago Opera Theater and Boston Opera Collaborative. Original cast recordings have been released of Blind Injustice and Three Way. Song cycles: In Real Life (Robert Paterson) and the Black Lives Matter piece for baritone and orchestra, Invitation to a Die-In (Nkeiru Okoye). Upcoming premieres include In Real Life II and Cocoa Cantata, both composed by Paterson; and a short opera with Okoye co-commissioned by Cleveland Opera Theater and On Site Opera. Alumnus of Bard College. David’s reporting and criticism appear in 4 Columns, Observer, American Theatre and elsewhere. Fellowships include Ucross, Hambidge Center, and SPACE on Ryder Farm. At MacDowell, he worked on Otherland, which was a finalist for the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Playwrights Conference. He was born and adopted in New Hampshire.
