Deborah Salem Smith is the playwright-in-residence at Trinity Repertory Company. Her play about the photographer Sally Mann, Some Things Are Private, premiered at Trinity in 2008. While at MacDowell, she worked on a medical malpractice drama.

Deborah Smith worked in the Van Zorn (formerly Kirby) studio.
Constructed thanks to a bequest from Sarah L. Kirby, Kirby Studio was the last new building to be erected during Mrs. MacDowell’s leadership (1907-1951).
