Deni Béchard was at work on his fourth book, Into the Sun, a novel about the civilian surge in Afghanistan. He is the author of the novel Vandal Love, which won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize; Cures for Hunger, a memoir about his father, who robbed banks; and Of Bonobos and Men, a book of nonfiction about conservation in the Congo.

In the winter of 1998, motivated by his passion for reading, Stanford Calderwood donated funds for a new writers’ studio.
