Edward Knight is an American composer whose work moves freely between jazz, theatrical, and concert worlds. He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and was introduced to music at a young age my his pianist grandmother. As a child, Knight excelled at the trumpet and went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s and doctorate in music composition from the University of Texas. After spending a year in New York, he earned a Rotary Scholarship for post-doctoral study at London’s Royal College of Music. His additional accolades include ASCAP’s Rudolf Nissim Award for best new orchestral work, the San Francisco Song Festival’s American Art Song Competition, the Delius Composition Competition, Bergen Festival’s Morton Gould Memorial, and Vienna Modern Masters. He is a Djerassi, Ucross Foundation, Yaddo, and MacDowell Fellow as well as recipient of the Aaron Copland award in 2007. Knight was named Oklahoma’s Musician of the Year in 2002.

Van Zorn (formerly Kirby)
Edward Knight worked in the Van Zorn (formerly Kirby) studio.
Constructed thanks to a bequest from Sarah L. Kirby, Kirby Studio was the last new building to be erected during Mrs. MacDowell’s leadership (1907-1951).
