Elaine Gottlieb Hemley (1916-2004) was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island. She received a degree in journalism from New York University. She wrote a succession of short stories and her first and only novel Darkling (1947). She married poet and novelist Cecil Hemley in 1953. He died in 1966, leaving her with three children. For many years, she taught creative writing at several colleges and universities.
