Seattle-based writer Evelyn Spence has an M.F.A. in fiction from Brooklyn College and worked on her first novel while at MacDowell. She's a former editor at Backpacker and Skiing magazines and writes freelance stories about travel, outdoor adventure, health, and fitness.

Funded by the Phi Beta Fraternity, a national professional fraternity of music and speech founded in 1912, Phi Beta Studio was built between 1929–1931 of granite quarried on the MacDowell grounds.
