At MacDowell, Fritz Buehner focused on a series of carved sculptures titled "Arroyo," and produced drawings using wood stains. He also worked on an outdoor site project that involved carving miniature abstract sculptures and buildings from a pile of wood logs. A show of his carvings and photographs was held at Whitebox Annex in New York in 2003.

The icehouse, built of fieldstone in 1914–1915, was a practical part of Marian MacDowell’s plan for a self-sufficient farm.
