Gerald Chenoweth received his B.M. and M.M. from the University of Massachusetts and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. His works have been performed extensively in the United States and Europe, and he has conducted contemporary music ensembles at Rutgers and the University of Iowa. His compositions have been recorded for Composers Recordings Inc. (CRI), the Smithsonian Collections of Recordings, and Access.

Gerald Chenoweth worked in the Sprague-Smith studio.
In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
