Gerald Humel (1931-2005) was an American composer of Czech origin. Humel was born the son of Czech parents. In 1961 he moved to Germany and spent his compositional life in Berlin. Among other things, Humel gained prominence when he founded the Gruppe Neue Musik Berlin in 1965 together with his friends and colleagues Karl Heinz Wahren , Wilhelm Dieter Siebert , Roland Pfrengle, and Jolyon Brettingham-Smith. From 1980 to 1993 he was a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin (West). From 1993 until his death he was a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin (West) and the German Academy of Arts Berlin (East) merged Academy of Arts, Berlin.

Phi Beta

Gerald Humel worked in the Phi Beta studio.

Funded by the Phi Beta Fraternity, a national professional fraternity of music and speech founded in 1912, Phi Beta Studio was built between 1929–1931 of granite quarried on the MacDowell grounds.
