Graham Farrell, a North Carolina native, received the Master of Music degree from Yale, where he began to explore the organ's potential beyond its traditional role. His concerts at First Presbyterian in Hudson, New York have included Bach, pop standards, opera highlights, jazz, and his own compositions. The "Broadway Goes to Church" program celebrates four of the great individuals and songwriting teams whose works have entered the national consciousness: Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and Lerner and Loewe. Says Farrell: "Working on these songs has been a personal odyssey for me. The poetry is ingenious, witty and urbane. This was a golden period."

In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
