Gregory L. Tucker (1953-2020) was a composer, pianist, and guitarist. He attended Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA and went on to earn two bachelor's degrees from University of Massachusetts-Amherst. At the time of his first residency, he was finishing up his master’s of music composition at Boston University, where he studied composition with Charles Fussell. He began his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory in 1986, working for Barry Vercoe, in the lab’s Experimental Music Studio. He went on to become the Director of Facilities for the Media Lab and remained in that position until his retirement in 2014. Greg was particularly proud of his contribution to the construction of the MIT Media Lab Complex, which involved much enjoyed trips to Japan to consult with Maki and Associates, the architects for the project.
His piece "Idle Conversation,"a duet for flutes, was published by McGinnis & Marx in 1992. It was also recorded by Leone Buyse and Fenwick Smith, and appears on Leone Buyse’s CD entitled The Sky’s The Limit. His most recent works were some piano pieces written for John McDonald entitled "Chant" (written in 2020), and "Etudes 1-5" (written in 2019).
Greg wrote numerous works, many of which can be heard on his SoundCloud page. Greg continued to perform throughout his life, often accompanying his wife Sally on flute. After discovering the rich local scene in traditional Irish music, Greg quickly proved himself a skilled backer on guitar and was a welcome participant in local sessions, playing regularly at both the Snug in Hingham and the Tinker's Son in Norwell.
