Gregory Spears is a composer. While at MacDowell, he worked on a chamber opera with librettist Greg Pierce based on the Thomas Mallon novel Fellow Travelers. His one-act chamber opera The Bricklayer, with a libretto by Farnoosh Moshiri, was premiered by Houston Grand Opera (HGOco).

Given to the residency by the Monday Music Club of Orange, NJ, Monday Music Studio is sited next to an enormous boulder deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago.
