Gwen Fabricant’s practice encompasses painting, collage, assemblage and scanned imagery, while directly utilizing found organic material. The preservation, changeability or fragility of natural forms is a topic of interest for the artist. In Fabricant’s compositions, objects are arranged and depicted as emblems of raw nature encountered in the context of urban human life. In the process of finding, seeing and recording reality, her work also investigates the underlying themes of memory and the uncanny. At Wave Hill, she will scan natural materials collected onsite and incorporate the digital images into her compositions on paper.
Fabricant has held numerous teaching positions, including at the National Academy School of Fine Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Hartford, Dartmouth College, Smith College, and SUNY College at Purchase. Residencies and grants include the Joan Mitchell Center Residency, New Orleans, LA; Heliker-Lahotan Foundation Residency, Cranberry Isles, ME; Artist in Residency Grant, Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Woodstock, NY; Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship, Bogliasco, Italy; The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Grant; and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Fabricant studied at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and earned a B.A. from Brooklyn College.
