At MacDowell in 2016, Harold Meltzer (1966 - 2024) worked on music for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His sextet "Brion" was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2009.

In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
