Howard Prince is a solo bass trumpet with James Levine and The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He won three Grammy Awards for recordings of The Wagnerian Ring Cycle on Deutsche Grammaphon. He also has participated in jazz performances with Mel Lewis & The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Dave Brubeck, and George Russell. He studied composition with Vincent Persichetti.

His theoretical concepts entitled “Complex Structure” and “Transitions” along with his conjugations of the 49 pentatonic scales were the objects of his focus during his stay at MacDowell.

Irving Fine

Howard Prince worked in the Irving Fine studio.

Youngstown Studio was given to MacDowell by friends of Miss Myra McKeown in Youngstown, OH, where she promoted both art and music. It was renamed Irving Fine Studio in 1972 in honor of Irving Fine, a distinguished composer, conductor, and teacher who was a MacDowell Fellow during the 1940s and 1950s.
