Ivy Alvarez is the author of Disturbance, her second collection, (Seren Books, 2013). Her first book is Mortal (Red Morning Press, 2006).
A MacDowell and Hawthornden Fellow thrice-shortlisted for Best Poem by fourW (Australia), both Literature Wales and the Australia Council for the Arts awarded grants for the writing of her second book. Her poetry features in anthologies, journals and new media in many countries, including a mobile app The Disappearing, and Best Australian Poems (2009 and 2013), with selected poems translated into Russian, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean.
Alvarez received an invitation to the Oxford Literary Festival in March 2013. Previous festival appearances include the National Young Writers Festival (Sydney) and the 2012 Seoul International Writers Festival. Her first invitation to Seoul in 2011 formed part of an Australia-Korea Poetry Tour. She was a visiting lecturer for creative writing at the University of Chester (UK) in 2010, and she wrote a series of poems inspired by the St. Fagans National History Museum that same year, thanks to a Literature Wales-supported residency.
Alvarez is the series editor for The Private Press and has fulfilled guest editorships at several journals, including Cordite Poetry Review, qarrtsiluni and Cha. In addition to poetry, she has contributed reviews, articles, and scripts for theatre and film. Born in the Philippines, Alvarez grew up in Tasmania, Australia, and has lived in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales before arriving in Auckland, New Zealand in 2014.
