James Kennedy is an Irish painter, best known for his distinctive, abstract landscapes exploring the connection between space and tonality. He was educated in the UK, receiving one B.A. from Royal Scottish Academy in Fine Arts and another from Rhodec Academy in Interior and Architectural Design. In 2003, he moved to New York. Kennedy has since earned a Fellowship at MacDowell, and several awards in 2014, including the Bridie Gold Medal.

James Kennedy worked in the Mixter studio.
Built in 1927–1930, the Florence Kilpatrick Mixter Studio was funded by its namesake and designed by the architect F. Winsor, Jr., who also designed MacDowell's original Savidge Library in 1925.
