James Lewis was born in Mattoon, IL in 1938 He studied music at the U. of North Texas, and the U. of Illinois. His principal teachers were Samuel Adler, Gordon Binkerd, and Gunther Schuller. He taught music composition at the U. of South Florida, Tampa for 31 years untill his retirement in 2005. Since 1996 he has been composing for the orchestra La Camerata Romeu of Havana, Cuba. The LP You Must Remember This -Music By James Lewis was produced by GM Recordings and his music is published by GunMar Music, G. Schirmer, and Media Press Inc. He has lived in the historic Mexican city, San Miguel de Allende since 2007.

MacDowell

James Lewis worked in the MacDowell studio.

Built in 1912, Pine Studio was renamed MacDowell Studio in 1943 in recognition of support from a group of Edward MacDowell’s music students. It was built as a composers’ studio and the stuccoed walls were intended to be soundproof.
