While at MacDowell, James Mendelsohn continued work on his first novel, The Year of Forgetting, about four members of a family in 1979 and 1980. He also worked on a as-yet titled work about a community in which the alphabet disappears.

James Mendelsohn worked in the Sorosis studio.
Sorosis Studio was funded by the New York Carol Club of Sorosis. The small, masonry studio was designed by F. Winsor, Jr., the architect who also designed Savidge Library (1926) and Mixter Studio (1927).
