Jane Shapiro started her writing career in 1992 by publishing her book After Moondog. Seven years later, in 1999, she published Dangerous Husband. Her short fiction has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper's Bazaar, Mirabella, and others. Shapiro's novel After Moondog was a finalist for a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, a New York Times Notable Book, and among the Village Voice's 25 Best Books of the Year.

In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
