John Casey is an author and a former professor in the M.F.A. program at the University of Virginia. His book Spartina won the National Book Award for fiction in 1989; he was also a recipient of the 1991 Rome Prize. His other books include The Half-life of Happiness (Knopf, 1998) and Compass Rose (Knopf, 2010). Casey is a graduate of Harvard and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

John Casey worked in the Chapman studio.
Chapman Studio was funded by Mrs. Alice Woodrough Chapman in memory of her husband, composer George Alexander Chapman. Symmetrically massed, the building is stuccoed on the exterior with a natural, unpainted cement. Its unusual half-timbered ornament consists of slender, knotty spruce poles painted a dark green color. A central, peak-roofed entrance porch appears on the north side…
