John Rowell's fiction, essays, and reviews have been featured in Tin House, Bloom, and Show Business Weekly, among others. He holds an M.F.A. from the Writing Seminars at Bennington College in VT. He teaches English and fiction writing at The Gilman School of Baltimore, MD, where he also directs in the Upper School theater program. His short story collection, The Music of Your Life, was a finalist for the Ferro-Grumley Prize for Best Book of the Year in 2004.

At MacDowell, John Rowell began work on his first novel, Overachievers.

John Rowell worked in the MacDowell studio.

Built in 1912, Pine Studio was renamed MacDowell Studio in 1943 in recognition of support from a group of Edward MacDowell’s music students. It was built as a composers’ studio and the stuccoed walls were intended to be soundproof.
