Jonathan Newman worked towards finishing Symphony No. 1, a wind ensemble commission based on themes of mid-century American Beat culture. He also began work on an opera based on the 1962 cult horror film Carnival of Souls. Both his flute "Concertino" and his large-ensemble "My Hands Are a City" were recorded for release on the Naxos label.

Jonathan Newman worked in the Chapman studio.
Chapman Studio was funded by Mrs. Alice Woodrough Chapman in memory of her husband, composer George Alexander Chapman. Symmetrically massed, the building is stuccoed on the exterior with a natural, unpainted cement.
