Josh Locy was born in the mountains of Virginia, studied literature in east Tennessee and, after deciding against becoming a Southern Baptist minister, moved to Los Angeles in 2004 to pursue work in entertainment.

In 2007, he assisted David Gordon Green on Pineapple Express. He became a mentor to Locy in many ways, and he went on to art direct two of his films, Prince Avalanche and Manglehorn. In 2010, through his work in film and commercials, he joined IATSE local 800, the Art Director’s Guild, and worked in this capacity for many great filmmakers including David O. Russell, Tom Kuntz, and Peter Berg, among others.

In 2016, his first movie as a writer-director, Hunter Gatherer, premiered at SxSW where the lead actor, Andre Royo, received an award for Best Actor. Locy travelled all over the United States, Canada, and Europe with the film, playing at over 30 festivals, including AFI Fest and winning the Independent Narrative Award at the Denver Film Festival. The film also secured a nomination at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards for the John Cassavetes Award granted to the best film made for under $500,000. In 2018, he joined the WGA and worked as a staff writer on the HBO comedy The Righteous Gemstones. Locy is currently completing a shooting draft of his second feature film, Body Blow.

In residence, he worked on a first draft of the screenplay for his second film, entitled The Dagger.

Josh Locy worked in the Irving Fine studio.

Youngstown Studio was given to MacDowell by friends of Miss Myra McKeown in Youngstown, OH, where she promoted both art and music. It was renamed Irving Fine Studio in 1972 in honor of Irving Fine, a distinguished composer, conductor, and teacher who was a MacDowell Fellow during the 1940s and 1950s.
