Joyce Van Dyke is a playwright and a lecturer at Harvard Extension. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, a B.A. from Stanford, and an M.A. in playwriting from Boston University. She has published articles in academic journals on Shakespeare and other topics, and is a recipient of the Harvard Extension School's Petra T. Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Prize. A MacDowell Fellow and Huntington Playwriting Fellow, Van Dykes other awards include Boston's Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding New Script and the John Gassner Playwriting Award.

Built in 1912, Pine Studio was renamed MacDowell Studio in 1943 in recognition of support from a group of Edward MacDowell’s music students. It was built as a composers’ studio and the stuccoed walls were intended to be soundproof.
