Julie S. Graham (1947-2018) earned a B.A. from Hood College in Frederick, MD and an M.F.A from the Central School of Art in London. She showed at Kingston Gallery, Boston and worked in the Drawing Project at Carroll and Sons. She showed at Harcus Gallery, Victoria Munroe Fine Art, Chase Gallery, Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, Neilsen Gallery, Creiger-Dane Gallery, Rose Art Museum, and Fuller Museum, Boston and the Currier Gallery of Art, NH; Fredereike Taylor, Stephen Haller Gallery and Art in General in NY; and Ruth Bachofner in LA. Grants and awards included: Massachusetts Cultural Council Award, finalist; Blanche Colman Awards; MacDowell Residency. Graham also led many International Art Programs.
Graham lived and worked in Boston and her work focused on recognition of places and things that are normally overlooked. Inspired by vernacular architecture, her series of works sprung from moments or fragments that are often unseen or hidden. This work refers to moments of juxtaposed forms upon which time, nature and humans have either intentionally or accidentally made their mark. Whether in industrial outskirts, working-class urban areas or temporary shelters around the world, unplanned patterns of form, textures, light and color reflect the character of local cultures and the passage of time.
