At MacDowell, Hale worked on her first full collection of poetry, exploring the impact of heritage on identity. Existing poems from the collection have been shortlisted for the Manchester Poetry Prize and the Newcastle Poetry Prize. Her debut novel, My Name is Monster, was published in 2019. She has also undertaken residencies in the UK and Belgium, and regularly runs poetry workshops in schools.

Katie Hale worked in the Sprague-Smith studio.
In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
