Katja Mater deals with the possibilities and impossibilities of photography, and its framework. Rather than documenting frozen moments of time, she records the numerous ways we can look at and think about photographic images; Mater turns the medium in on itself, and in doing so disturbs its status of accuracy. Instead of looking through photography, as a more or less transparent medium, she wants to make viewers look at photography, and at the same time experience their own perception.

Katja Mater worked in the Nef studio.

Nef Studio, the first entirely new studio built after 1937, was donated by esteemed photographer, explorer, author, and MacDowell Fellow Evelyn Steffanson Nef in 1992. Endowed funds for the studio’s maintenance in perpetuity and an annual Fellowship for photographers were given in addition to funds for construction.
