Kerry Laitala grew up on the Maine coast and has been making hand-crafted films and videos for the past 25 years. She relocated to San Francisco, where she is constantly invigorated by the vibrant culture of moving image artists. A recipients of two Golden Gate awards from the San Francisco International Film Festival and funding from the Princess Grace Foundation, Laitala is currently chair of the Film Department of the San Francisco Art Institute. Her project used "Old Stone Face," or "The Old Man of the Mountain," in Lincoln New Hampshire as its inspiration. She worked in the dark in her studio to create shadowgraphic traces on the surface of film.

Nef Studio, the first entirely new studio built after 1937, was donated by esteemed photographer, explorer, author, and MacDowell Fellow Evelyn Steffanson Nef in 1992.
