Lael Wertenbaker (1909-1997) was a journalist. She was a graduate of University of Louisville. She worked as a road secretary for the Theatre Guild, Inc. of New York City from 1929-1938; was a foreign and war correspondent for Time from 1940-1955; and then worked as a freelance writer after 1955 doing work like writing scripts for CBS-TV (Orson Wells series) and for British television (Rediffusion series).

She was a member of the board of Monadnock Music, National Repertory Theatre Foundation, and Ossabaw Island Foundation. She was awarded honorary doctorates by Keene State College (1975) and Franklin Pierce College. (1982).
