Leland Bell (1922-1991) was an American painter. Bell was self-taught, and was an active advocate for artists he admired, such as Karl Knaths, Jean Arp, and Piet Mondrian. Bell’s contemporaries were Hélion, Fernand Léger, Balthus, Alberto Giacometti, and André Derain. In addition to painting, Bell was an active teacher, lecturer, jazz aficionado, and drummer.

Originally a working barn perched atop the namesake hill of Hillcrest Farm, this building was converted to serve the arts in 1956.
