Leonard Kriegel is an American author who was born in the Bronx, New York and suffered from polio. He has received Guggenheim, MacDowell, and Rockefeller Fellowships and three of his novels have been New York Times Notable Books of the Year. His writing also includes essays and stories some of which have appeared in Partisan Review, Sewanee Review, and Harper’s.

In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire.
