Liz Kotz is an author and professor. She attended Littérature Moderne in Paris, earned a B.A. with honors in humanities from Stanford University, earned an M.A. in English and comparative literature from Columbia University, studied film in the graduate department of San Francisco State University, and completed her Ph.D. studies at Columbia University with distinction. She is the author of the books Words to Be Looked At: Language in 1960s Art and An Anthology of Chance Operations as well as many essays and poems about art. Kotz has published widely on the work of contemporary artists and currently teaches at UC Riverdale.

Funded by the Phi Beta Fraternity, a national professional fraternity of music and speech founded in 1912, Phi Beta Studio was built between 1929–1931 of granite quarried on the MacDowell grounds.
