Margaret-Anne Smith is a visual artist based in Los Angeles. She is an abstract and conceptual artist who explores the interdependency of concept and material, using micro-plywood sculptures constructed in her studio, rocks and stones, as well as painting and photography. Alongside an intuitive and visceral approach, Smith constructs formal principles to design and govern the creation of her work.
In 2024 Smith was included in two group shows: “All Media 2024” a group show at the Irvine Fine Arts Center, and “Connections: StudioEleven Artists at Colburn” at the Coburn School of Music in Los Angeles, in addition to being awarded a grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation for realizing greater self-determination within her community.
Smith received a higher diploma in art from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and a higher diploma in film production from Tshwane University of Technology, both in South Africa. Smith has exhibited her work in and around Los Angeles.
At MacDowell, Smith worked on the beginning phase of “Third Shape,” an inter-related series of abstract three-dimensional work whose shape and scale is determined by the movements of the human body.
