Discipline: Literature
Region: Raleigh, NC
MacDowell Fellowships: 1969, 1970, 1974

Margaret Harrell is the author of the coffee-table collectible The Hell’s Angels Letters: Hunter S. Thompson, Margaret Harrell and the Making of an American Classic in collaboration with Ron Whitehead (Norfolk Press). Also notable are her memoir series, Keep This Quiet! I–IV, and Space Encounters III, rev. ed., Particle Pinata Poems, and the photography book Cloud Conversations. At Random House, she copy-edited/assistant-edited Hunter S. Thompson’s first book, Hell’s Angels. She and Hunter became fast friends. HST acknowledged her in Gonzo Letters 2. And his letters to her, in full color, became the basis of The Hell’s Angels Letters.

In addition to being an author, she is a book editor, cloud photographer (Who’s Who in American Art), and advanced meditation teacher, deep into consciousness exploration. She mentors people wanting to maximize their potential. A three-time MacDowell Fellow, Margaret has lived many years outside the United States—in Morocco, Switzerland (studying at the C. G. Jung Institute), and in Belgium, but currently resides in Raleigh, NC.

Academically, she has a masters in contemporary literature from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Duke. Since 2014, she has been a VIP panelist in the annual Gonzofest in Louisville, KY, and is a sought-after speaker in conferences elsewhere. Currently, she is in charge of academic panels for the first-ever European GonzoFest: Calling the Underground, to be held in Dublin in September 2024.
